I attended MHSG from 1963 to1970, and I thoroughly enjoyed the geography field trips that I attended when at school. I won the Angus Butterworth Geography prize in 1970. I was also a technician in the Physics department from1969 to1970.
I won a scholarship to St Andrews University where I studied Geography.
I trained as a secondary school teacher of Geography and taught Geography all my working life, first in London and then in New Zealand where I still live.
I did a degree in English and History in New Zealand and have also taught those subjects.
In 2007, I graduated with a PhD in Geography; my topic was the history of school and university field trips in New Zealand.
I set up a school’s archives and wrote the history of the same school, Awatapu College, Palmerston North, New Zealand. Recently I wrote the history of a local sports club.
Now retired, I spend a lot of time keeping fit and volunteer at our city’s archives, as well as attending many discussion groups about history, books, poetry and philosophy.
Thanks to being introduced to geography field trips at MHSG, I have led over 500 school trips. This has been a major highlight of my life.
