On 20 November 1940, an Open Day was held at the new School at Grangethorpe. Until September 1939, Manchester High’s home had been in Dover Street, but plans were already under way to move the School to Grangethorpe Road. On 2nd September 1939, however, the School had to be evacuated to Cheadle Hulme because the Dover Street area was deemed to be at risk of bombing. Luckily, the evacuation only lasted a year, and pupils and staff were thrilled to move into the new Grangethorpe Road buildings in September 1940.
Everyone must have been very proud to show off the new school at Open Day in November. Ironically, only a month later, on the night of 22 – 23 December 1940, the new school was hit by a land mine and almost completely destroyed. The before and after photos show the horrific extent of the damage.
