Mitzi Spink at Hawkshead Guide Camp 1933

Did you know that MHSG had its own guide company from 1917-1971 and a cadet ranger company from 1928 until 1943?

The school archive has some wonderful photographs of the 1933 summer camp at Hawkshead, all the way from New Zealand. They were donated by Sue Grant, daughter of the late Marjorie (Mitzi) Spink. Originally from Altrincham, Mitzi was a pupil at MHSG from 1931-1937 and a keen guider and ranger leader.

Here is a young Mitzi, complete with guide tie and her very heavy-looking kitbag outside her tent in 1933.

The 1933 School Magazine reports:

‘We started well by arriving on top of a lorry, where several of us were so precariously perched as to cause tremors to our anxious guardians at every hairpin bend.’

Hard to imagine today!
