Singing has always been popular at MHSG, but did you know that one of the most famous sopranos of the 20th century, Isobel Baillie, was a pupil here from 1908-1909?

Isobel made her Halle debut in November 1921 when her fellow soloist was the celebrated Spanish cellist, composer, and conductor, Pablo Casals. She was known as ‘the nightingale’ of the Halle.

She was especially known for her roles in opera and oratorios and gave more than 1000 performances of Handel’s Messiah!

In 1951, Isobel Baillie was awarded a CBE, then in 1978 was made a DBE. Her autobiography, Never Sing Louder than Lovely, was published in London in 1982. She remained in touch with Manchester High and regularly gave talks to old girls, pupils and parents.
